Before The Secret, there was Creative Visualization by Shakti Gawain (so 70’s Marin County). Her book about manifesting, originally published in 1978, is the literal bible of using visualization techniques to get more clarity about what you want and the direction you want to go in. I found it in the mid-1990’s and it was a fun and helpful read. Because I was a 20 something and never really had enough money, I used the book to help me manifest a better car and a relationship. I had forgotten about the latter goal until about a year later when I was already dating the man I would marry. As I packed up my apartment to get ready to move in with him, I found the materials I had used to manifest the relationship. They were pretty spot on. So I can speak for the usefulness of this book.
Gawain emphasizes using multiple anchors to help you with visualizing – engaging as many of your senses and modes as possible to achieve your goals. I use this with my practice because when you anchor your ideas in multiple directions, you are creating a cognitive and sensorial framework around which micro decisions and actions can coalesce.
She also urges you to meditate on your goals and get relaxed and use what we now know as self regulation to activative our parasympathetic nervous system and get our neocortex online to help with your visualization.
Another guideline Gawain teaches is to spend most of your time honing the image of what it is you want to manifest. The more energy you expend understanding not just the what but also the why, the more the magical “how” can begin to appear. And about the magical “how” – it’s now mainstream to let go of how you’ll actually achieve your goals because that can actually hinder you. But as far as I know, Gawain was out there shouting all this from the rooftops in the 70’s.
Here is a basic technique from her book:
- Think of something you want, something simple and attainable
- Get in a comfortable position and begin to relax your body. When you get relaxed, begin to imagine the thing you want exactly as you would like it.
- Admire it, enjoy it, see yourself with it, talking about it, celebrating it and so on. Add as many details as you can to make it more “real”
- Now, as you hold the image in your head, say an affirmation (either silently or out loud) like:
- I am having a wonderful time at my new job and meeting so many great coworkers
- My new yoga class is exactly as challenging and rewarding as I like it
- I love and accept myself exactly as I am
- End your visualization with the following mantra:
- This, or something better, now manifests for me in a harmonious way for the highest good of all concerned
- Repeat this daily or as often as you can
Here is how you rewire your brain with techniques like these:
Manifesting combines mindfulness, meditation, affirmations and guided imagery. By incorporating mindfulness and meditation, we can gently retrain our nervous system to spend more time in the parasympathetic state. When this occurs, our neocortical function has the ability to help us think about what we want and hope to achieve. We also experience the health benefits associated with mindfulness. Affirmations can help us foster a growth mindset and seek out choices that help rather than hinder our actions. Last, guided imagery is basically using your imagination to create, and it creates and solidifies neural pathways that help us think more creatively and resourcefully.
Who knew that manifesting had so many beneficial effects? Try this simple technique and not just reap some material benefits. You’ll also be rewiring your brain to be more resilient, creative and calm.
